Out of Business
On Christmas Eve 1971, Juliane Koepcke was boarding her flight from Lima, Peru with her mom. They were flying to Pucallpa to meet with Juliane’s father. Because they were using a domestic airline, which serviced smaller airfields and shorter flights, the tiny Lansa Airlines, which was already seven hours late and on a deadline due to Christmas, decided to take off, with its manifest of 92 human beings, despite weather forecasts indicating that thunderstorms and lightning during the flight were nearly assured.
Juliane’s high school prom graduation occurred just a few hours before boarding and she and her mother could see the storm from the windows of the propeller plane, until a bright light hit the left engine – lightning had struck the plane.
Juliane even remembers her mother saying, “Now it’s over.” The plane nosedived and disintegrated on the way down. Juliane was now free falling, strapped and buckled to her seat, and rotating down to the thick Amazon rainforest below her.
Because of trauma, shock and a concussion, Juliane vaguely remembers what the next twenty hours looked like, but somehow, after falling from about 30,000 feet, she ended up sitting in her plane seat (lesson in buckling up), with a fractured collar bone, torn ACL, and deep maggot-infested cuts. Being that this 17-year-old was short-sighted and lost her glasses and one shoe, she probed every step she made to make sure no venomous snakes or other obstacles got in her way.
Her mother was an ornithologist and her father was a zoologist, so Juliane grew up in a research station in the forest (a unique childhood upbringing), which was the backdrop to Juliane’s miraculous survival tale.

Juliane recovered a bag of candy, which she rationed for ten days, until she was found by three loggers. They took her to a nearby village for hospital treatment, after the search for survivors had ended and even after Lansa Airlines declared bankruptcy!
She had to pour gasoline on her open wounds and pull out maggots with her bare hands, follow the stream (advice she remembered from her dad) and fight the elements, wearing only a mini-dress.
All of this could have been avoided, had the management at Lansa Airlines not succumbed to pressures from passengers and crew to get home before Christmas, knowing full well they were sending this flight into conditions that were beyond horrible.
In life and especially in the markets, greed can cause people to do things that carry massive risk, but that could also somehow land us that improbable reward. Greed can play emotional tricks on otherwise logical and reasonable human beings and make them buy equities, sometimes on margin at the worst possible times, and on the flipside, sell out in panic and disgust at the worst possible times.
People buy obscure cryptocurrencies or long-shot companies that are years away from proving a concept, and there’s just no need to do this.
